This is a portrait of Geronimo from the Eyes of American History series. Geronimo was an Native American medicine man who led many raids against the U. S. and Mexican authorities. His family was murdered by Mexican troops and he took out many cross border raids into Mexico seeking vengeance and battled the U. S. to maintain control of tribal lands. He was never captured, but eventually tired of fighting and submitted himself to life on the reservation.  Across his face is a basket weave texture in honor of his native heritage. Here is another example of how I use technique as a means of enhancing the narrative of a piece. The intricate pattern gives the portrait a sense of the complexity and strength of the subject. In his eyes and expression is a reflection of a dignified man in a world changing around him beyond his control.
