This is a painting in the Eyes of American History series of the inventor Nikola Tesla. He was an inventor who worked with Edison, and became his rival, as the electrification of the United States was developing. Best known for his invention of the alternating current method of delivering electricity, better known as AC/DC, he was a brilliant pioneer in a multitude of fields including radio, television, florescent lighting and remote controlled robotics. An eccentric genius who moved from Croatia to the U. S. in his early 20s, his work transformed America and the world. When electricity was in its infancy, Thomas Edison led the charge to have his direct current system installed as the dominant system in the country. The only problem was that it required a power station every few miles just to function. Tesla solved the problem of transmitting electricity efficiently by introducing the AC/DC system that could transfer electricity many miles. He was backed by the financier Westinghouse who saw the great potential it the system. Tesla’s system prevailed and is the standard used today throughout the world.
One of the many devices that he invented was the Tesla Coil, a machine that shot out long streams of charged particles that lit up like lightning. This effect is shown in the facial features of this work which emphasizes his “mad genius” allure. He was truly a man ahead of his time and when he died, the U.S. government seized his papers and classified them top secret. Most of them are still top secret to this day.
