This is called The Thirteen Bars. It is from the Lincoln series and the title refers to the 13 stripes on the American flag. It is acrylic on paper textured with pumice and glazed with silver paint and black and white. I built a special shadow box that holds the paper on a curved support and painted the strips as rounding bars to create an Op Art feel. It appears flat, and the back round seems to regress the longer you stare at the face. The hair is given depth with modeling paste that lends an impasto effect to frame the subjects head. Lincoln is one of my favorite subjects. I find that the gravitas of his sullen visage is always worth exploring. Below is a close up of the work.
