Fine art nudes

The fine art nude has a rich history in Western art. From the statues of the Greek gods, to the religious art of the Renaissance, the nude in fine art illustrated stories of mythology and the Bible.

Fine art nudes as works of art on their own matured as a genre in the 19th century. The fine art nudes of this era relied on bathing and bedroom scenes. Symbolist and Surrealist brought back the conceptual use of the fine art nude, supplanting the narrative use of the nude in fine art. In contemporary art, the fine art nudes of artist such as Lucian Freud depict the nude in stark realist terms, making the fine art of the nude an unflinching examination of nakedness.

In my work, the fine art nude evolves from these precedents. In some cases the nudes fine art context is woven into an analysis of artistic and philosophical concepts. Other works resonate with the aesthetics of 19th century fine art nudes. In all cases, I strive to create a beauty with purpose.
